This info tells you how to get your Golden Retriever puppy use to a collar and leash for training at a young age.
One of the first things that you should teach your pup after bringing him home is how to be comfortable with a collar and leash. These two basics can save him from getting into trouble with you.
You also don't want to have a pup or a dog continually tugging on the leash. And it can be a real challenge to catch him when he runs away before he has commands.. So to save you from these headaches, here are a few tips on how you can get your Golden bud use to his collar and leash.
Do's: Pick a comfortable and durable collar and leash. For small pups, use a lightweight leash and a heavier leash for large dogs. A leather buckle collar will do and a six foot nylon leash is the most convenient.
Put the collar around his neck while he is playing with his toy or eating. He may eventually notice that something is there and start to get it off his neck. Ignore him and get his favorite toy so he can focus on. Sooner enough he will not bother having the collar on. Just make sure it is not too tight or too loose just enough to fit two fingers.
Slip on the leash once he is comfortable having the collar on. Your dog may try sniffing or touching it out of curiosity but immediately stop him if he is trying to chew the leash. Distract him by giving a chew toy instead.
